KATHMANDU —
Nepal is calling for greater international support after a catastrophic flood disaster that has highlighted the growing vulnerability of Himalayan communities to climate-related hazards.
Nepal has requested $20 million in climate compensation through international climate-financing mechanisms following floods linked to the collapse or melting of a glacier. The disaster reportedly caused thousands of deaths or disappearances and destroyed homes and critical infrastructure.
Nepali officials argue that the country contributes only a very small share of global greenhouse-gas emissions but faces severe consequences from a changing climate.
The disaster has also increased calls for stronger cooperation between countries sharing the Himalayan region, particularly on early-warning systems, disaster preparedness and the exchange of environmental information.
Japan has separately announced $3 million in emergency grant aid for flood-hit Nepal, according to Japanese media.
The situation has renewed international debate over how climate-vulnerable developing countries can receive faster assistance after extreme weather disasters.
