BRASÍLIA —
Brazil has moved to establish nationwide rules governing the use of artificial intelligence in education, with new measures focusing on student safety, teacher supervision and responsible use of AI tools.
Brazil’s National Education Council approved regulations on September 1 that restrict unsupervised AI use by students through the fifth year of elementary education. AI activities for younger students must be planned and supervised by teachers.
The regulations also introduce different levels of risk for AI applications in education. Uses considered excessively risky are prohibited, while schools are expected to maintain transparency, data protection and appropriate governance.
The policy reflects growing international debate over how schools should respond to rapidly expanding AI technology.
Brazilian education authorities have emphasized that artificial intelligence should support learning rather than replace teachers.
Schools will have a transition period to adapt to the new rules, while AI education is expected to become increasingly integrated into curricula.
