Farhadul Kabir, Central Founder of Dr.M.A. Wazed Miah Memorial Foundation, World Sports Development Committee, IQ Olympiad is facing a severe health crisis following a targeted assassination attempt and suspected poisoning in June 2015. The incident has left the prominent leader suffering from trauma-induced neurological complications, requiring specialized medical attention.
The Assault: Gunfire and Deception
The attack unfolded on the afternoon of June 15, 2015, near the Hatirjheel police outpost in the capital. According to media reports and family statements, terrorists operating from a motorcycle targeted Grandmaster Farhadul Kabir and fired two rounds of bullets.
While Mr. Founder managed to survive the initial gunfire, the assailants reportedly resorted to a deceptive tactic to incapacitate him. A criminal circle allegedly provided him with a green coconut (dub) laced with a sedative or poisonous substance. Shortly after consumption, Mr. Kabir began to lose consciousness while attempting to return home by rickshaw, eventually collapsing near the Katabon area.
Medical Emergency and Hospitalization
AKM Farhadul Kabir was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in an unconscious state and was admitted under the medicine unit.
• Initial Condition: Upon admission, he was diagnosed with “Unknown poisoning” and significant weakness in his lower limbs.
• Mental Trauma: While he regained consciousness on June 11, his family reported that he appeared mentally disoriented following the shock of the incident.
• Clinical Observations: Medical examinations revealed that his knee jerks were bilaterally diminished.
• Diagnostic Findings: Although MRI scans of the brain and dorsal spine appeared within normal limits, biochemical reports showed a high lipid profile, with Triglycerides at 464 mg/dl and a high risk-ratio for cholesterol.
Diagnosis and Recommendation for Foreign Treatment
Following extensive evaluations, including nerve conduction studies (NCS) and EMGs, specialists identified his condition as trauma-induced neurological disorder and radiculopathy.
Despite ongoing treatment with medications such as Naprox Plus, Neuro B, and Coveram, his recovery has remained complex. In a formal statement issued in May 2016, Dr. Mohammad Zaid Hossain, Associate Professor of Medicine at DMCH, stated that Mr. Kabir might need to be referred abroad for further evaluation and advanced treatment to address the long-term effects of the trauma.
